Giveaway! Waterproof EDC Notebook Kit
For paid subscribers of The Waterproof Notebook, I'm doing a drawing for a Lochby Sidekick with a Rite in the Rain notebook, index cards, and all-weather pen
I received some exciting news this week! The American Society of Magazine Editors announced the 2026 National Magazine Awards nominations. “Out of the Wild: I Followed a Wild Salmon from Sea to Plate” (Food & Wine July/August 2025) was named a finalist in the Lifestyle Journalism category, alongside stories in The Cut, New York Magazine, Philadelphia Magazine, and Texas Monthly.
Congrats to fellow NMA finalists Bridget Read, Madeline Leung Coleman, Bradford Pearson, Kae Lani Palmisano, Adam Erace, Victor Fiorello, Emily Goulet, Jason Sheehan, Regan Fletcher Stephens, and Daniel Vaughn. Go follow their work!
To celebrate, I’m doing my first giveaway. As a special perk for paid subscribers to The Waterproof Notebook, I’ll do a drawing for a waterproof EDC kit I assembled with some of my favorite waterproof products: A Lochby Sidekick V2, one Rite in the Rain Stapled Notebook, 10 Rite in the Rain 3x5 Index Cards, and one Rite in the Rain All-Weather Pocket Pen.
The Sidekick, which can double as a wallet, is made of waxed canvas, which repels water. It has small loop for a keychain or carabiner, plus interior pockets for cash, credit cards, and a pen. (It’s a tight squeeze for more than three index cards). The pen writes through water, grease and mud.
I’ve fallen into a whitewater rapid with a Rite in the Rain notebook, and can attest this waterproof paper stands up to thorough soaking and spin-cycle tumbling. This kit will fit in your back pocket and endure whatever the world throws at you.
To be eligible for this and future giveaways (plus some subscriber-only posts, such as a previous post about How A Book Becomes a Hollywood Movie and an upcoming one about how to write a documentary) subscribe, or give a gift subscription, or recommend The Waterproof Notebook.
NOTE: This giveaway was NOT sponsored by companies or swag. These are products I bought and paid for myself. I’m giving them away because I like them and when something good happens, I like to pay it forward. :)
I’ll do a random drawing on my birthday at the end of March, and will contact the winner directly and (with permission) post on my Notes.

Congratulations, Kim! What a thoughtful way to pay it forward.
What a terrific set of writing tools in this giveaway. (It's for paid subscribers; I thought I *was* a paid subscriber but somehow hadn't signed up. I'm subscribed now--and if you're serious about improving your writing craft, you should be too.)
